Spring is here! The snow is finally melting away, and April showers will be bringing May flowers very soon. While the residents of our Stamford apartments wait for their landscaped grounds to green up and the flowers to bloom, I know someplace to go where spring has already arrived!

The NY Botanical Gardens! What? You’ve never been there? Never? Not even on a school trip in grade school? Well, here’s your chance! It’s easy to get to by car or train; it has flowers exhibits, forests, meadows, and even an authentic Japanese water garden to stroll through. AND its right next to the world famous Bronx Zoo so you can make a day of it, if you like.

Right now, the Botanical Garden is in the middle of its annual Orchid Show. The theme is “The Orchid Show: On Broadway,” and it features the stages of several legendary Broadway theaters done entirely with thousands of orchids (think of the floats in the Rose Parade), as well as a collection of sketches by Al Hirschfeld, the famous caricature artist whose work lines the walls of famous NYC landmarks such as Sardi’s supper club. Did you know that March is designated as national Craft Month? That’s right, this is the month to discover, or re-discover the joy of crafting and all its many benefits.
From its humble beginnings with just a handful of manufacturers and retailers celebrating, National Craft Month has grown into an international celebration of creativity and innovation with millions of craft enthusiasts participating during the month. For the residents of our downtown Stamford apartment communities of Morgan Manor, Hoyt-Bedford and the Townhouse apartments, downtown Stamford offers several options for you to ‘get your craft on.’

Michael’s Crafts (store) is located just a few blocks north on Summer St. Here you’ll find aisle upon aisle of crafts ideas, projects to do at home and all the craft supplies you, your kids (or the kid in you) could wish for. There’s something there for everyone’s tastes and budget. The Rainbow II Toy Store in the Stamford Town Center mall, just 2 blocks south from our Townhouse apartments, has a nice selection of children’s craft kits to choose from, and the Target store on Broad Street has two aisles of arts & craft supplies as well.

It doesn’t matter what you do, or which craft or hobby you choose, as long as it’s fun. And who knows? You may be on your way to creating your very own family heirloom!

Here Comes the Sun

Whether you live in or near one of the Hamden apartments near Quinnipiac College, one of the Hamden apartments near Southern CT State, one of the apartments near New Haven University, or any place in Connecticut for that matter, you are part of the vast population ever so happy to finally see sunny skies. The very first thing that came to mind when I saw sunny skies is the ever popular Beatles song, Here Comes the Sun. It certainly has been a very long, very cold and very lonely winter in our State, and there couldn’t be a better description than what George Harrison expressed in these lyrics:

Here comes the sun, do do do do
Here comes the sun, and I say
It’s all right

Little darling
It’s been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling
It feels like years since it’s been here

Here comes the sun, do do do do Read More→

Where the Stars Come Out

If you sing in the shower and think you sound great, you probably do. It is a fact that the acoustics of the shower make for wonderful music. But if you want to test your theory that you actually have a great voice, perhaps you should consider performing at a local karaoke night. Karaoke is believed to have originated in a small bar in Japan. The in-house band recorded their music onto tape, and if they were not there the singer would just sing along to the tape. The word Karaoke was written on the tape, Kara meaning missing and Oke meaning band or orchestra.

Karaoke could make you the singing star you’ve always wanted to become. In Karaoke, you can have the same music playing in the background from your favorite professional group, while you sing the lyrics. Don’t know the words? No problem. Karaoke sound tracks allow the lyrics to scroll across the screen of a standard TV. Now, anyone can be the star!

This isn’t to say that you should rely on Karaoke to pay the rent on your beautiful two bedroom condo in Branford, much less expect to quit your day job in nearby New Haven to spend all summer on the beautiful beaches along the shoreline. But it is fun, even fun to watch. Branford offers a number of venues.

Here are a few of them:
The Chowder Pot on Tuesdays from 8:30 to 12:30.
SBC on Wednesdays.
Humphrey’s Grill & Bar (203) 481-7735
La Luna Ristorante
